Laser Hair Removal | General Questions
Laser hair removal is a medical treatment that uses concentrated light energy to target and damage hair follicles, reducing their ability to produce new hair over time. At Alpha Laser Clinic, we use the Polaris ND:YAG medical-grade laser, which emits a specific wavelength of 1064nm that penetrates deep into the follicle and destroys it at the root.
The process works in stages because hair grows in cycles. Only follicles in the active growth phase respond to the laser, which is why multiple sessions are needed. Each session treats the hairs that are currently active, and over a full course you see a progressive and significant reduction in hair growth.
This is not the same as IPL (Intense Pulsed Light), which uses a broad, unfocused flash of light and is far less effective on coarse, thick, or darker hair types. The ND:YAG laser is a true medical-grade device, and the difference in results is considerable.
No form of hair removal can be medically classified as permanent. The correct and compliant term is ‘long-term hair reduction’. At Alpha Laser Clinic, we are always transparent about this.
What laser hair removal does achieve, when a full course of 6 to 8 sessions is completed, is a significant, lasting reduction in hair growth. Most of our clients see between 80 and 90 percent reduction. Any hair that does return over the years tends to be finer and lighter than before.
Top-up sessions once or twice a year can maintain those results effectively. We will give you an honest picture of what to expect for your specific hair type at your book a free consultation.
Most clients need between 6 and 8 sessions to achieve the best long-term results. Hair grows in three phases and the laser can only act on follicles in the active growth phase, which is why you cannot do it all in one session.
After a full course, many clients choose 2 to 3 maintenance sessions per year to keep results sharp. Some need fewer. It genuinely varies depending on the area, your hair type, hormone levels, and how your body responds.
We offer both pay-as-you-go options and multi-session packages. At your book a free consultation, your clinician will give you a realistic plan with a clear quote.
Most clients describe it as mild discomfort, the most common comparison is an elastic band snapping briefly against the skin. It is sharp for a second, then it is gone. It is not a sustained or prolonged feeling.
Some areas are more sensitive than others. The neck and areas close to bone tend to feel more noticeable than the chest or back. But the treatment moves quickly, and most clients find subsequent sessions far less of a concern once they know what to expect.
We use a cooling air system during treatment and apply ice to sensitive areas to keep things as comfortable as possible. If you have any concerns, just tell us at your book a free consultation.
Laser hair removal with a medical-grade ND:YAG laser is very well-tolerated and serious side effects are uncommon. The most typical reaction in the 24 to 72 hours after a session is mild redness and some sensitivity in the treated area, similar to a light sunburn. This clears up on its own.
Some clients also notice a tingling sensation for a short period after treatment, which is completely normal.
Rare side effects can include temporary pigmentation changes, mild bruising, or small scabbing in a treated area. These are uncommon and usually resolve quickly. The risk of these effects is significantly lower with ND:YAG than with IPL or cheaper laser devices, particularly for clients with darker skin.
Your clinician will walk through everything with you before your first session. If anything concerns you after a treatment, contact us directly.
Laser Hair Removal | Skin Types and Suitability
Yes, and this is one of the most important things that sets Alpha Laser Clinic apart. We use the ND:YAG medical-grade laser, which operates at a 1064nm wavelength. This longer wavelength bypasses the melanin at the surface of the skin and targets the follicle directly, making it the safest and most effective laser for darker skin tones including Fitzpatrick skin types V and VI.
IPL and many diode lasers carry a real risk of burns, pigmentation changes, and scarring on darker complexions. The ND:YAG does not carry the same risk profile when used correctly by a trained clinician.
A large proportion of our Bradford and Oldham client base are men of South Asian, Middle Eastern, and African-Caribbean heritage. We have treated hundreds of clients with darker skin tones safely and effectively. If you have been told elsewhere that laser is not suitable for your skin type, we strongly encourage you to book a free consultation with us.
IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. It is not a laser, it is a broad-spectrum flash of light that covers multiple wavelengths. It relies on a strong contrast between skin colour and hair colour to work, which means it is mainly suitable for people with light skin and dark hair, and it has limited effectiveness on thick, coarse male hair.
The ND:YAG laser uses a single, concentrated 1064nm wavelength. It penetrates much deeper into the follicle, targets the root directly, and works on a far wider range of hair types and skin tones. For men, whose hair on areas like the beard, chest, back, and shoulders tends to be dense and coarse, this difference is very significant.
We see many clients who have spent money on IPL elsewhere without seeing meaningful results. After switching to ND:YAG laser treatment at Alpha Laser Clinic, the difference is usually clear within the first two sessions. At Alpha Laser Clinic, we use ND:YAG only, we do not use IPL.
Laser Hair Removal | Treatment Areas
We treat a wide range of areas for men, including: beard line and neckline, cheeks, forehead edging, chest, stomach, back, shoulders, arms, underarms, and hands.
For grooming treatments, we specialise in beard line-ups and precise edge work, this is one of our core strengths. If you want a clean, defined beard line without daily shaving maintenance, we can make that happen over the course of your treatment plan.
For body treatments, the most popular choices among our male clients are the full back and shoulders, chest, and stomach, individually or as part of a combined package.
One important point to note: in line with our clinic values, we do not offer laser hair removal below the navel area. If you have questions about whether a specific area is available, just ask at your book a free consultation.
Yes, and beard line precision work is something we genuinely specialise in. It is not a secondary service for us.
Many men want sharp, clean beard lines without the daily or every-other-day shaving that maintaining them requires. Laser hair removal makes this possible on a long-term basis. You tell us the shape and line you want, and we target the follicles outside that boundary. Over your sessions, those areas stop producing hair, leaving you with a natural, permanent-looking edge.
Our specialist packages such as The Cut Above are built around this exact outcome. We also work on necklines, cheek shaping, forehead edges, and any area where grooming precision is the goal.
If you are in Bradford or can reach our Oldham branch, book a free consultation and bring a photo of the look you want. Our clinicians will tell you exactly what is achievable.
Advanced Facials for Men
We offer three facial packages for men, each designed with a different skin concern in mind:
The Deluxe Facial is a deep-cleansing treatment that removes built-up dirt and oil, refreshes dull skin, and restores a healthy, natural look. It is a solid foundation treatment and works well for men who want a thorough, no-fuss facial.
The Aqua Facial (our water-based treatment) goes a step further, it cleanses, hydrates, and brightens the skin using a multi-step process that is well-suited for men dealing with congestion, uneven skin tone, or dehydration.
The Ultimate Facial is our most comprehensive option, combining deep cleansing with targeted skin restoration. It suits men who want visible results in texture, brightness, and overall skin condition.
All three are available at our Bradford and Oldham branches. We also offer LED light therapy as an add-on for skin recovery and managing acne-prone skin.
An Aqua Facial is a water-based multi-step skin treatment that cleanses, exfoliates, extracts impurities, and hydrates the skin in a single session. Unlike a standard facial which tends to use manual pressure and products applied by hand, the Aqua Facial uses a specialised device that delivers a controlled flow of water and serums directly into the skin.
The result is a deeper level of cleansing with much less irritation. There is no redness, no downtime, and no recovery period, you can go about your day immediately after. For men with congested pores, oily skin, or uneven texture, it is particularly effective.
We offer the Aqua Facial as part of our Advanced Facials range at both our Bradford and Oldham clinics. It can also be paired with LED light therapy for enhanced skin recovery.
LED light therapy uses specific wavelengths of light to work on the skin at a cellular level. Different colours target different concerns, red light supports collagen production and reduces inflammation, while blue light targets the bacteria that cause acne breakouts.
At Alpha Laser Clinic, we offer LED light therapy as an add-on to our Advanced Facials treatments. It is particularly useful for men dealing with acne-prone skin, post-shave inflammation, or anyone who wants to support their skin’s recovery after a more intensive treatment.
It is painless, non-invasive, and requires no downtime. It takes around 20 minutes and can be added to any facial appointment. Ask your clinician at your book a free consultation whether it is a good fit for your skin concerns.
Bookings, Pricing, and Clinic Info
Your first appointment is always a free consultation and patch test, no commitment and no pressure. Here is what to expect:
Your clinician will sit down with you to understand your goals, assess your skin and hair type, and recommend the best treatment plan for you. This is your chance to ask as many questions as you need.
You will then receive a free patch test on the area you want treated. We ask you to wait 24 hours after the patch test before starting your first session, this is a safety requirement, not optional. If all is well, you can book your first treatment as soon as the following day.
You can book a free consultation online, call us on 01274 900256, or email info@alphalaserclinic.com. Consultations are around 30 minutes.
The cost depends on the area you want treated and the number of sessions your hair type and growth pattern require. We do not publish a flat fee because it would not be accurate or fair, every client is different.
What we offer is complete pricing transparency at your book a free consultation. Your clinician will assess your needs and give you a clear, itemised quote before you commit to anything.
We offer both pay-as-you-go (PAYG) sessions and multi-session packages, with flexible payment plans available so you do not need to pay everything upfront.
We also have a price match promise: if you find another clinic using the same medical-grade ND:YAG laser technology at a lower price, we will beat it by 10 percent.
